Keywords:: Isocrat.org, About | ||||||||
The Name:
The word isocrat is composed of the greek prefix "iso-", meaning "equal", and the suffix "-crat", meaning "to rule" or "power". It was also an available domain name. Simply put, isocracy is the aim of this site, with the focus being on the equal treatment of all orientations and sexual identities by governments and societies alike.
The Purpose:
The purpose of isocrat.org is four fold.
1. A Web Resource. Much of the information available on GLBTQ issues out there is well scattered throughout the internet. Quality is variable, much of the relevant data is difficult to find or sequestered in libraries, and biases run rampant. We hope to collect, summarize, and present relevant information (research, links, books, etc.) as dispassionately as possible in the hopes of improving the debate around GLBTQ issues, for all sides.
2. An Advocate. Speaking of biases, the members of isocrat.org have them too. We have our morals to promote, our homes and families to defend., and our causes and friends to support. To that end, this site is meant to advocate, as the name implies, for the equal treatment of GLBTQ individuals and their families, no less, and no more.
3. A Forum for Debate. As a web resource and advocate, inevitably, there will be debate. We hope to create an environment where these issues may be discussed in an informed and civil manner. We hope to build on our common ground wherever we find it, and only throw stones after the first is thrown.
4. A Place to Find Help. Being a member of the GLBTQ community can be tough. Our members here at isocrat.org have been through many of the rough times that are too common to the queer experience. We hope to make isocrat.org a place where those now going through those trials can find some solace, a kind word, and help in the right direction. To be clear, though we do advocate for equal rights for gay and lesbian couples, this hope to help applies equally to all gay, lesbian, transgender, and queer men and women, and their families, be they in a same-sex or heterosexual marriages.
The Structure:
A site guide may be found here.
The Library section of our site, in the left sidebar, contains information on relevant research, books, web sites, and various other media.
Articles in isocrat.org are segregated into five main sections, the links to which are in the tabs in the header. Science deals with the research on GLBTQ issues, from the Nature vs. Nurture debate to demographics. Faith addresses the doctrinal stances of various world religions and gives the perspective of GLBTQ individuals that are or have been members of particular faiths. Politics contains information on a range of family law in various jurisdictions, and arguments for equal rights for couples despite their sexual anatomy or orientation.
